KCRC Data Management Department:

The Data Center

KCRC has a data center that controls all telecommunication and data storage functions at the campus. The data center occupies one of the rooms in the buildings and is made up of a 19 inch rack cabinet housing a number of rack mountable servers and varoius communication equipment. The data center is supplied with backup power consisting of several uninteraptable power supplies and a 30KV diesel generator. The room housing the center is also air conditioned to control the temperature and humidity of the equipment.

A set of routers and switches is used to transport data between the servers and to the rest of KCRC. Redundancy of the Internet connection is provided via a high speed fiber connection. The servers at the data center are used mainly for data storage (upto 2.4 Terabytes of storage space utilising RAID technology) and for running the basic Internet and intranet services needed by internal users at the campus, e.g., e-mail servers, proxy servers, and DNS servers. Network security at the center is guaranteed using a firewall and intrusion detection systems. Additional off site monitoring systems are also provided by our Internet Service Provider in case of a failure of communications inside the data center.

The data center is able to reliably provide data storage and communication functions including voice over Internet functions.

Data Management

To ensure that all reporting and data management requirements dictated by the various ongoing studies and programs are met, the Data department is well staffed with trained personnel and equipped with extensive computerized equipment. It consists of two Data Managers and 6 Data Officers dedicated to the different studies and programs.

The KCRC Data management office is primarily responsible for data entry and maintenance of organization information captured from the various ongoing programs and studies. Required data sets are captured using both manual double data entry and automated digital scanning and faxing techniques and continuously cleaned to minimize errors. Different statistical software are used for data entry and analysis.

The data management team is also incharge of scheduling clients and study participants for clinic visits using locally designed information systems which automatically generate their schedules and missed visits.

The data management team is also incharge of backing up (both on campus and off campus) of all the organization data on a daily and weeekly basis to ensure maximum data recovery incase of a problem.
